The BOOs were even louder than I expected. Every play involving Beltran [ABs, fly balls] also involved a chorus of boos from the entire stadium.

I have to agree that before the game I read the article by Justice... and I can't believe I am saying this... but I agreed that the best way to make him feel bad would be to show him what he was missing. He gets booed at Shea, let's show him how great it would hav ebeen to play here. Makes sense and I was all for it... until I read all those quotes by Carlos that he expects to get booed and we as fans just look at the now and forget about the past and yadda yadda yadda. We didn't boo Kent, why... because he didn't screw us. We made him an offer he said no and goodbye. We still cheered him because he was great for us. We boo you because you screwed us... don't tell us about the trade clause just shut up and suck like we want you too. I was happy to hear the boos after that and he deserved them. We loved him as a Stro and it was the fans, not anything else, it was the fans that got Mclane to offer a huge ass contract but he was using us and I hope we sweep his ass out of town. If we sweep them he will be 6 games out of the WC lead and that is tough to overcome. See ya Beltraitor.

Very, very loud..in fact, Beltran said this:

with that quote, seems like the boobirds may be out even stronger tomorrow. silly beltran. he should know not to say things like that.... but i'm not suprised since he was silly to go to the mets anyways...
either that or tomorrow, the entire stadium on his first ab should just be thunderously silent. then either boo or be silent for any later situation. really get in his head.... |

Hindsight is 20/20...but I'm glad he's not an Astro. The heck with him. Lets sweep the Mets and hurt Carlos where it effects him the most...in the standings.
That being said, I don't blame Astro fans for letting him hear it. I'd be right there with them. Screw him........ |

I was there. The place was sold out. Couldn't believe how brutal the crowd was. Even the guys who were not booing seemed to be smiling at the ones who were. Hell, they even booed him when he was walking to the dugout. I saw several guys getting tossed out of the place. I bought my first SRO ticket after a scalper asked 50 per for the Crawford boxes.

Re: For those not at the game Thursday. Beltran apologists??

Those who weren't at the game Thursday may have seen some Beltran apologists on TV.
Morgan Ensberg made a somewhat smart aleck pre-game remark that if the fans did boo Beltran, it would show that Beltran made the right choice, because the fans didn't want him anyway. To follow that line of thinking, maybe Ensberg would have defended Benedict Arnold. Even the great Larry Dierker made a remark -- paraphrasing, "I don't know why the fans want to boo Carlos." Then Dierker went on to try to put the blame for Beltran leaving completely on Boras. But, Larry, Carlos had to sign the contract, too. |

By all rights we should not have won that game. Pedro vs Astacio but we did! Isn't it great! After reading Beltran's lies in the paper today about why he didn't sign with us I'm glad we booed him. I hope we keep it up and I'll do my part Sunday.
In rerospect however I'm now glad we didn't sign him. We would never of gotten our moneys worth. Willie may never be as good as Beltran overall but dollar for dollar he's way better. |

Quote: Me too.... Quote: Did anyone see the sign comparing the stats of Beltran and Willy? Along with the "Saving over 11 million...Priceless" That sums it up for me. The worst part about not signing Beltran was the way he and Boras strung us along and lied and came up with the last second no trade clause BS. In retrospect, the way he played during the regular season and the way he has played this season, he is way too over-hyped and overrated. In a way, we got lucky that we didn't sign him. And yes it's easy to use hind sight. ______________________________________________________

Boras isn't to blame. He works for Carlos not the other way round. Carlos signed it. He should be booed. It's one thing to leave for more money....but that wasn't the case here.
Yes, he's not having a great year but I, for one, still have a "man-crush" on the guy (as a ball player of course). He just has that great swing and can really play CF. (sigh) |

Reading the links on the Astrodaily to NYC articles about the Beltran booing is interesting. Newsday calls MMP a "cauldron of hatred." Another paper is even more sarcastic:
"Carlos Beltran carried the Houston Astros to within a game of the World Series last fall. But last night the crowd at Minute Maid Park treated him like he had come to repossess their trailers. Beltran was booed, long and loud. The crowd of 43,552 even booed when he caught fly balls in center field. Apparently he had some nerve taking $119 million from the Mets." "Repossess their trailer?" Yikes. They're getting a tad touchy, you think? Actually I find that statement kind of funny...even though part of the humor is observing the misconceptions of the writer. |

I for one hope all of the booing is over with. To continuosly boo a player that way shows our team, who for the most part happen to like Beltran, that if you turn your back on us we'll hate you for life. Baseball is a game for kids but a business for men. Make no mistake about it, I'm as displeased with Beltran for the circus that he and Boras put us thru this offseason but that is water under the bridge and should be put to rest. Beltran made a business decision just as any one of us would do if in the same position. Kent's situation is a lot different because he had ties to Houston because he was with the club for somewhat of an extended time. Beltran was on rent for the remainder of the '04 season and really didn't have ties to the club. Randy Johnson did the same to Houston some years back and even went as far as stating he didn't want to play in Houston even before he was traded to us. I know that if another employer asked me to work for them for more than what my current employer pays me, I'd jump ship. Let's just beat the Mets the next 3 games and that will speak volumes to Beltran. Booing a player can be fun but at the same time is classless.

The Houston Astros Fans are classy, knowledgeable team suppoters for the most part. The Beltran situation is totally different than any other trade or player move. Another poster said it correctly that the reason he got the contract offer was because the fans wanted it and screamed loud and long to sign him. Beltrass and his agent, Borass, took advantage and insulted us all.
Beltran is a low class business person and deserves to be insulted with boo's. It's a business and so he will be treated like he treated us. Nothing personal Carlos! Full Speed Ahead! Fire At Will!

astronut,
Beltran had a home here, the people loved him, treated him like a god. We had a website practically begging him to stay. the chemistry on the team was amazing, The Astros offered him every dime they had to offer, which was a ridiculous amount of coin, and it still wasnt good enough. It was typical current player greed, Biggio could have done the same thing several years ago and gone to Colorado, but he has a little something called loyalty and integrity. Anyway, the booing is actually the ultimate sign of respect, It actually shows how much we liked him and how he broke our collective hearts when he left. If he was smart, he'd just keep his trap shut and understand that. |

Quote: Mo and Larry are just feeling sorry for him, they remeber the good times. I liked him getting booed more than I felt sorry for him getting booed. I realize that Carlos isn't a bad person, and he seemed a bit bemused by the response. But, that booing, it's all part of the game. |

For those not at the game Thursday. Beltran Apologist?

OK!!!! I understand why people are booing but I for one would choose not to do so if I were in the ballpark. But I suppose that when everyone else around you is booing it's hard to control yourself. Beltran may have very well made a bad business decision but if it weren't for his poor decision Willy "T" would be stuck on the farm for 5-10 years or even worse on an opposing team. I don't think Beltran would intentionally give the Astros or us fans the shaft but that is kinda what happened. And I must admit it feels good knowing that his new team is looking at us from behind in the wild card chase and that Willy is out performing him this year. And by the way I didn't intend to portray the Houston fans as classless I just don't think that excessive booing is classy.

Re: For those not at the game Thursday. Beltran Apologist?

Baseball is NOT like any other business. There are not thousands of people outside my company who feel the same passion about my performance as they do with baseball players. Parents dont take their kids out on Friday nights to watch me work and if they did, those kids wouldnt look back on it as great childhood memories in 20 years. Thats why Beltran makes $119 million and I make well, significantly less. Thats why his contract is guaranteed for 7 years and I can get fired tomorrow if I dont perform. Thats why Kenny Rogers is still employed with the Texas Rangers where I would have been canned before the camera hit the ground.
With that in mind, those select people who do care about my employment status and job performance would be upset if I strung along my current company just to jack up the price of a competitor with whom I was going to sign with the whole time anyway. Its not illegal and its done in many other forms of business, but its dishonest, classless, and really shows that individuals true personality. Hes still a great ballplayer (although I agree he is overrated), but he brought this reputation on himself and he cant be that shocked by the reaction. I say that this shows the passion that Astro fans have for their team and because of certain PR reasons, none of the players can really say anything, but Id bet that within that clubhouse there are more than a few players who are proud of how these fans have stood up for the team. Im sure they love the emotion that the fans are showing towards them. So to borrow zzagman's tag line... Fire at Will!! |

The game last night was electric.... it was awesome to be a part of!

I wish I could be there but I'm a fan that lives out of state. I will miss the entire series on television too because my local cable provider decided to black these games out as part of their programing. I will be listening in on the radio though. I suppose then I can tell my kids that when I was younger I used to have to listen to the ballgames on my radio because we weren't able to catch them on cable, which costs $50 mother----ing dollars a month.
