Note that ex-Astro Wayne Franklin was called up to replace Stanton as a lefty in the Yanks' bullpen. That may tell you something about Stanton's performance. Both Stanton and Quantrill have high ERA's in the 6 - 7 range. Actually Stanton could be a reasonable risk, given that he has good years in the past and pitched very well toward the end of 2004. It might be a 50-50 gamble that the chance to start over gets him going again. (Didn't Miceli come from the Yankees in a mid-season trade a few years ago and pitch must better than he had for the Yanks?) And it's hard to think that Stanton would be worse in the lefty role than Franco--their ERAs are in the same range. If the Astros don't have to pay his contract, I could see trying Stanton to see if it works out, but I wouldn't be all that excited about it. The upside is that he might return to his previous serviceable form and the downside is he could turn out to be another David Weathers.
