I like Scott, but... |
Lead | |
|
I really like Luke Scott. I think he is a hell of a kid with a ton of potential. That said he is not a three hitter on a contending team right now. Berkman was amazing tonight and he came up as the lead-off hitter every inning because Scott was always the final out. Like I said he is a likable, but Orlando Palmiero should be hitting 6th behind Lane and Berk should be third. Hopefully with Mo coming back it won't be an issue but still... it sucked to see Scott with a chance every time he came up and coming up empty. That stuff gets in a guys head. I haven't said a bad word about Garner all year but I disagreed with that line-up decision.

Agreed on all counts but the Astros *are* 2-0 with him batting in the third spot. Don't knock success.
I think Garner is thinking that Scott will see better pitches if he is hitting ahead of Berkman and is trying to get the kid's bat going. I'm guessing, though, that Scott goes back behind Lane as soon as Ensberg is ready to return to the lineup. |

I think that is exactly what Garner is thinking... but the kid ain't Maris hitting in front of Mantle. I just think that if he keeps hitting in the 3 hole, with runners on and Berkman behind him and he keeps ending rallies he is going to develop a complex. Especially when Berkman keeps hitting the cover off the ball with no one on in front of him.

Not saying it was the right thing to do (hindsight 20/20 and all), but the idea was that Scott would get to see more fastballs over the plate by hitting in front of a super hot Berkman. It doesn't look like a good move, but then again I guess Garner had no way to know that the Phillies would not give in to Scott. The crazy thing is that Padilla threw him more change-ups than fastballs in tonights game. That shows that their (Phillies) advance scout must have really liked what he saw from Scott over the last two series vs. the Reds, and Cards.
One other thing that might have made Garner feel good about the Scott in that spot was all of the fastballs right over the plate Burke got hitting 3rd (he went 3-4, with 2 doubles,1 HR, 3 RBI, and 3 R) on 8/21, when Ensberg was given a day off. Edit: I'm to slow. Bob Hulsey beat me to it. |

if he keeps hitting in the 3 hole, someones going to throw him fastballs, and he will make them pay, give him time, hes not hurting us in the 3 hole, so whats the problem, he has more power potential than burke, and seriously, would you prefer a berkman lane 3 4?

Yes, I would prefer a Berkman/Lane 3/4 combo.... if I am making a line-up without Ensberg absolutely. Just because we won tonight and last night doesn't mean Scott didn't hurt us. We played hard and won both nights and I am not taking anything away from either game but Scott could have cost us. He left 2 on tonight, and went 0-5 with no walks. At least three times he made the final out of the inning with our best hitter coming up behind him. The point of a three hitter is to hit for average and power, drive in runs and get on base so your 4 hitter can let you walk home. Lane was awesome last night in that last AB and he was solid tonight. Hoping people will start to throw fastballs he can hit out is not what you want from a 3 hitter. A 3 hitter should be able to hit mistakes and good pitches. Use the opposite field and hit for power. On a last place team I would say let him get comfortable... we have nothing to lose. On a team fighting for it's play-off life I say if you want him to see more fastballs let him hit behind Willy because if they want to throw off-speed stuff then at least Willy can steal 2nd. I am not trying to bash Scott and I like the guy he just isn't a 3 hitter YET. He may be amazing but he isn't now.

Didn't Scott hit a couple of at'em balls in game 2 of the Phillies series, one of which was caught at the warning track? He could have lit up the Phils just as easily and made Garner look like a genius. I think he was a decent fill-in with Ensberg out.

Luke is hitting the ball hard when he gets ahold of it. The problem I've noticed is how badly he is still missing the low and outside pitch. I've seen him swing and miss horribly at it a dozen times, but he has yet to even touch the ball when it's in that location.

I am still surprised we got Willy T and Luke Scott for Jeriome Robertson. Maybe we can get a minor league prospect for Brandon Duckworth in the off-season. At least a double A player ?

I think Scott needs a little more seasoning before he becomes someone we can consistantly rely upon to get on base, which is the primary goal if you're hitting in front of Berkman. He just looks outmatched at the 3 spot; I think hitting Burke or Palmeiro 3rd would be a better option at this point until Ensberg comes back.

He simply needs to learn to slap the outside pitch foul the opposite way. This is something that probably can be taught. It is just more reason to watch him next season. But he can certainly be of some use in our offense.
