Yankees look to force Game Five against the Angels
L.A. Angels at N.Y. Yankees 8:15 pm EDT American League Division Series Angels lead, 2-1
BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- After playing through a steady drizzle on Friday, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and New York Yankees never got a chance to play on Saturday.
The tarp never came off the drenched field on Saturday and Game Four of the American League Division Series was officially postponed at 1 p.m. EDT.
The Angels took a two games to one lead in the best-of-five series with an 11-7 win here on Friday and will try to oust the Yankees from the postseason for the second time in four years Sunday.
Jarrod Washburn was slated to make the start for Anaheim, but was scratched due to a sore throat. Instead, manager Mike Scioscia will turn to Game Two starter John Lackey (0-0, 3.18 ERA).
Lackey, who will be pitching on three days' rest, allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings in Wednesday's contest, but did not factor in the Angels' 5-3 win.
The righthander has won eight of his last nine decisions and is 2-0 against New York this season.
The Yankees will still have Shawn Chacon (7-3, 2.85), who was acquired from Colorado on July 28 after going 1-7 with a 4.09 ERA with the Rockies. He makes his first postseason appearance after allowing just one earned run in 22 2/3 innings of his final three starts.
"I think the biggest thing was realizing that I was being put in a situation to win and knowing that I might not get an opportunity like this and just getting a chance and trying to run with it," Chacon said.
The Yankees have lost two in a row for the first time since early September and try to avoid their first three-game losing streak since July 21-23 against the Angels.
Game Five, if necessary, was originally scheduled for Sunday night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. That has been rescheduled for Monday at a time to be determined.
